THE MILK TESTS AT FLOWERDALE CREAMERY.
TO THE EDITOR OF THE CHRONICLE
Sir,-In the report of the Yea Dairy. Company, which appeared in the CHRONICLE of 30th January, the chairman of directors, Mr. D. McLeish, accuses my son of not honestly giving the milk tests. After my son had received notice to arrange for a transfer to another creamery (which he declined to do), meeting Mr. McLeish in Yea, I spoke to him on the subject. He said he had no fault to find, but that I had bad neighbors sending reports to them. I may state the cows I am milking at Flowerdale at present were last year milking at the Muddy Creek. and the test there was the highest for some time. Will Mr. Bett state through your paper how he managed to get a 3"1 test of my milk, as he has never taken as low a test before or since? PIONEER PASSES AWAY.

MR. JOSEPH CLEELAND.

There died at his home, Reservoir, Preston, on the 14th inst., at the advanced age of 83 years, Mr. Joseph Cleeland, one of the pioneers of the State. He was born in County Down, Ireland, and with his parents, four brothers and a sister, arrived in Melbourne by the ship, Andromache, in June, 1840. The family first lived in Collins street, where land was bought opposite the Coffee Palace, afterwards removing to the Darebin Creek, in which district Mr. Joseph Cleeland had resided ever since, though the rest of the family have scattered far and wide. The first break in the family occurred only a few years ago, when Mr. John Cleeland died at Phillip Island, where he was a big landed proprietor. The second break occurred when Mr. Joseph Cleeland died, after the family had been in the State 78 years. The survivors of the family are Mrs. Shaw, wife of the proprietor of the once famous Phoenix foundry, Ballarat, Mr. William Cleeland, of Mansfield, and Mr. Frank Cleeland, of Launching place.

Mr. Joseph Cleeland, whose wife pre- deceased him about 17 months, leaves a family, of six, five sons, including Mr. Norman Cleeland, now in England, and one daughter, Mrs. Thomson, of Warragul.

The interment took place at the Epping cemetery, Rev. James Legge, B. A., officiating at the grave.
