The Name
As best we can tell the surname "Cleeland" is derived from "Cleland". Further information on the Cleland-Clan can be found at www.clan-cleland.org

It is believed by many in the Australian branch that at some point in Ireland, there was an argument between two brothers, and one added an extra 'e' to their name.

The Cleelands and Clelands in Ireland originated from Scotland.

Immigration
The Cleeland's, like many of Irish descent took part in the massive emigrations of the 1700's and 1800's to the United States and Australia. Many descendents of these Cleeland's can be found in both countries. We would love to hear from Cleeland's who emigrated to other nations to add them to this page.

Families
As yet neither the Australian nor the US branch of the Cleelands have been able to find a common ancestor. Both branches originated in Ireland and not Scotland, and both branches emigrated from Ireland within a couple of generations of each other.

The US branch can be traced back to Arthur Cleeland, native of Down County Ireland, who immigrated to the US in 1791.

The Australian branch can be traced back to William Forde Cleeland who immigrated to Australia from Belfast in 1840.

It is possible that William Forde was a grandson of Arthur Cleeland's but this is yet to be proven.
